'Line of Sight' Ride Highlights Macular Degeneration

In May, 2006, 20-year-old Californian Quinn Baumberger embarked on a solo bicycle journey from the northern-most bicycle-accessible point in the Americas to the southern-most point: that is, from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Terra Del Fuego, Argentina. His goal is to raise $19,500 -- one dollar for every mile he bikes -- for research on macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in people over 55 years old, affecting more than 10 million Americans.

Why Macular Degeneration?

Quinn has a personal connection to this disease, which struck his grandfather, Joe, when he was in his sixties. This trip is a perfect opportunity for Quinn to honor his grandfather and to help the millions of people affected by this disease.

Why the Pan-American Highway?

The Pan-American offers a great deal of social, geographic and climatic diversity, from the low desert to elevations of 15,000 feet, from reed houses on Lake Titicaca to ocean-front weekend homes. "By way of bicycle," Quinn says, "it offers a perfect opportunity to see the Americas without looking through the window of a rental car or tour bus."
