SEATTLE, WA (November 7, 2003)óIn 1982, Derek McFadden, born prematurely at just a bit over four pounds, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. There to guide him through these uncertain times were many family members. But in particular, his grandmother, Shirley, and grandfather, "Papa Dick" Kenbok, were the cornerstones of love and nurturing. Always there to lift him up, hold him, stand by his side.
Through the years, "Papa Dick" and Derek became souls united, oftentimes fused in hard love as Papa refused to let Derek become a victim of his affliction. "Stand on up and do it," were Papa's continued words of encouragement, never allowing Derek to use his cerebral palsy as a crutch.
In 1997, Papa Dick was diagnosed with lung cancer. With the love of his family, and the guidance of a greater spirit, he survived. But in 2002, the cancer returned, this time homesteading his liver. And Derek, intuitively anticipating that this would be his last opportunity to share his love with the grand old senior fellow, went to work writing a book of prose dedicated to him. With serendipity and intent as his allies, he published his book, "Prose from a Grandson to a Senior Fellow," exactly one month before Papa passed over. "I'm honored," was all Papa Dick could say, tears in his eyes.
